Today is World AIDS Day

Eric December 1, 2010

We’d be irresponsible talking about health and fitness without acknowledging that today is World AIDS Day.  There are an estimated 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the United Stats, and HALF of those people don’t even know it yet.

What’s worse is that there are still places where there is still a stigma surrounding those who are living with this horrible disease.  If you’ve ever been close to anyone who has had HIV, like I have been, you understand what a horrifying disease it is to have.  Modern medicine has made the disease bearable, but we still haven’t found a cure.  So don’t go out and do anything stupid.  Be responsible.  Know your status.  Be smart.  Be safe.  And get your friends and family to do the same!

Below is one of my favorite ads.  It’s a french ad about HIV/AIDS.  Think though, that if you don’t know your status, YOU might be the one who is the monster.  This ad rings true for ANY STD.  Last year, the number of new Syphilis infections doubled in my city.  Doubled!  Know who you’re sleeping with and take precautions to protect them and to protect yourself.  What’s the point of finally achieving your hot bod if you die young?

Find a testing center here:  National HIV and STD Testing Resources.  Many centers are offering free testing today.  If you can afford to, make a donation when you get tested so that someone else can get tested too.
